Working on a project for my school’s track team on a summer morning. I noticed the sun was perfectly angled to expand the shadows of the runners into full size. I launched my Mavic Pro to 300 ft. and made them run in arrow shape.

Which I was able to capture this interesting overhead shot of them running and their shadows be an identical profile shot of them.

In my book, Choices: A Journey to Uncharted Purpose, I explore the power of decision-making and the profound impact of guiding others to embrace their own paths. Today, I want to share insights from my personal experiences, supported by key principles from Choices: A Journey to Uncharted Purpose, and reflect on how leadership shapes individuals and communities alike.

The Essence of Leadership

At its core, leadership is not about having all the answers but about asking the right questions. True leaders focus on empowering others rather than controlling them. They understand that their role is to equip people with the tools, knowledge, and confidence needed to discover their strengths and rise to their potential.

In Choices: A Journey to Uncharted Purpose, I discuss the importance of self-discovery and reflection. These principles apply equally to leadership. A leader's greatest success lies not in the accomplishments they achieve personally, but in the growth and achievements they inspire in others.

Take, for example, a leader in a workplace setting. Instead of saying, “This is the way to do it,” a leader might say, “What are your thoughts on solving this problem?” By doing so, they encourage their team to think critically and creatively, fostering innovation and self-reliance.

The Role of Choices in Leadership

Every leader must confront their own choices before guiding others. Leadership requires a willingness to be vulnerable and acknowledge that perfection is not the goal—growth is. In Choices: A Journey to Uncharted Purpose, I emphasize the journey of embracing uncertainty and learning through the decisions we make. This concept directly applies to leadership because, in guiding others, leaders also evolve.

Leadership is an ever-changing journey that challenges individuals to choose between being a manager who directs and a mentor who empowers. The latter requires patience, humility, and the courage to let others shine.

One principle from Choices: A Journey to Uncharted Purpose that stands out is the idea that "our paths are interconnected." A leader’s role is not to walk the path for someone else but to illuminate the way, offering support and encouragement. This interconnectedness creates a ripple effect, as those who are empowered by a leader often go on to empower others in turn.

Examples of Empowering Leadership

  • The Parent as a Leader: Parenting is one of the most profound forms of leadership. A parent’s job is not to dictate every decision but to equip their children with the values and confidence to navigate life independently. For example, instead of telling a child, “Don’t do that,” a parent might say, “What do you think will happen if you do that?” This approach helps children learn to assess risks and consequences for themselves.
  • The Teacher as a Leader: In the classroom, a great teacher doesn’t simply give answers—they spark curiosity. By encouraging students to explore, ask questions, and think critically, teachers prepare them for lifelong learning.
  • The Sports Coach as a Leader: In sports, the most impactful coaches don’t just train athletes on the fundamentals of the game; they inspire them to believe in their ability to win, overcome setbacks, and grow both on and off the field. Legendary basketball coach John Wooden once said, "A good coach can change a game. A great coach can change a life." A coach who encourages players to think strategically, take ownership of their roles, and trust in their teammates is fostering leadership within the team itself.
  • The Business Leader: In my company, one of my goals has always been to ensure that my team members feel valued and capable. I ask them what they think can improve processes and give them the freedom to implement their ideas. The result? Not only do they feel ownership, but the business thrives as a result of their innovative thinking.

Challenges in Leadership

Empowering leadership isn’t without its challenges. It requires trust—both in oneself and in others. It also demands that leaders relinquish their ego, understanding that success is not about personal glory but collective achievement.

Sometimes, the people you lead may falter or resist the opportunity to grow. As a leader, it’s essential to remain patient and supportive, helping them learn from their mistakes and celebrating their victories, no matter how small.

Conclusion – Leadership as a Choice

Leadership is a choice—a choice to serve others, to uplift, and to inspire. It’s about stepping into a role where your success is measured not by what you accomplish alone but by the impact you have on others.

As I wrote in Choices: A Journey to Uncharted Purpose, “The strands of life bond together over time, creating a stronger tomorrow.” Leadership weaves those strands into a tapestry of growth, connection, and shared purpose.

The next time you find yourself in a position of leadership, ask yourself: Are you showing the path or merely dictating the direction? True leadership lies in helping others see what they are capable of and empowering them to achieve it.

Let’s all strive to lead not with authority but with empathy, understanding, and the desire to create a brighter future—one choice at a time.
