We rarely think about the roots of a tree when the weather is calm.
We notice the branches.
The leaves.
The height.
The beauty.
But when the storm arrives, what we cannot see becomes more important than what we can.
The roots determine what remains standing.
Life works much the same way.
When things are going well, it can be easy to overlook our foundation.
But adversity reveals it.
Pressure reveals it.
Success can reveal it too.
What do we hold onto when circumstances become difficult?
What guides us when opportunities become plentiful?
What remains true when emotions change?
A grounded life is built below the surface long before the storm arrives.
⸻
Not everything in our lives should remain the same.
We should learn.
Adapt.
Change our minds when wisdom requires it.
Improve our methods.
Let go of habits that no longer serve us.
But there should also be principles that are not negotiable simply because circumstances become inconvenient.
Integrity.
How we treat people.
Keeping our word.
Our commitment to family.
Our faith.
The standards by which we choose to live.
When we know what is nonnegotiable, decisions become clearer.
We may change how we reach the destination.
But we do not have to abandon who we are along the way.
⸻
We often talk about staying grounded during hardship.
But success can challenge our foundation just as much.
When opportunities increase, so can distractions.
When recognition increases, ego can quietly enter.
When money increases, priorities can shift.
When people begin listening, we can start believing every thought we have deserves to be heard.
Growth can change our circumstances without needing to change our character.
The goal should never be to become so successful that we no longer recognize the person who originally began the journey.
Achievement should expand our ability to serve.
Not our need to feel important.
⸻
When life becomes noisy, return to your why.
Why did you begin?
Why does this matter?
Who are you doing this for?
What kind of person did you want to become?
Purpose creates perspective.
It reminds us that the goal was never simply more.
More money.
More recognition.
More accomplishments.
More attention.
Those things may come.
But they cannot become the foundation.
When we remember why we started, we often rediscover what deserves our attention now.
⸻
Being grounded is difficult if everyone around us simply agrees with us.
We need people who celebrate our victories but are not impressed by our titles.
People who remind us where we came from.
People willing to say:
“You were wrong.”
“You need to rethink that.”
“That doesn’t sound like you.”
“Slow down.”
“I think you’re losing sight of what matters.”
Those relationships are valuable.
Truth is not always comfortable.
But people who genuinely care about who we are becoming will sometimes challenge the direction we are moving.
Do not surround yourself only with people who applaud you.
Stay connected to people who help anchor you.
⸻
There is an important difference.
Being grounded does not mean refusing to change.
A tree with strong roots still grows.
It reaches higher.
It expands.
It produces new branches.
It survives new seasons.
Its foundation does not prevent growth.
Its foundation makes growth possible.
We should be the same.
Stay curious.
Take chances.
Build.
Dream.
Travel.
Learn.
Create.
Become.
Just make sure that as your life expands outward, your roots continue growing deeper.
⸻
Everyone needs practices that reconnect them to what matters.
Prayer.
Reflection.
Reading.
Exercise.
Time with family.
A quiet morning.
A walk without a phone.
Writing.
Serving someone.
Sitting somewhere that reminds you how small you are compared with the world around you.
These moments are not wasted time.
They recalibrate us.
They create enough quiet to hear ourselves again.
Because sometimes we do not need another answer.
We simply need enough stillness to remember what we already know.
⸻
Pause and ask yourself:
• What keeps me grounded when life becomes overwhelming?
• Which values in my life are truly nonnegotiable?
• Has growth changed anything about me that I need to reconsider?
• Who in my life is willing to tell me the truth?
• When was the last time I intentionally became still enough to reconnect with my why?
Growth is important.
But growth without roots can eventually become instability.
⸻
Being grounded does not limit where we can go.
It strengthens the person who will arrive there.
⸻
Becoming grounded means learning how to grow without becoming disconnected from the foundation beneath us.
Life will change.
Opportunities will change.
People will change.
We will change.
And we should.
But growth does not require abandoning the principles that helped us become who we are.
As I shared in Choices, our lives are shaped by the decisions we make daily.
Some choices determine where we go next.
Others determine who we will be when we get there.
In the Year of Becoming, becoming grounded means allowing our dreams to grow higher while making certain our values grow deeper.
Because the strongest life is not the one that never experiences a storm.
It is the one that knows what keeps it standing when the storm arrives.
Never become so focused on how high you can grow that you forget how deep your roots need to be.
