We often want evidence that what we are doing matters.
Did they listen?
Did they understand?
Did the conversation help?
Did the lesson stick?
Did anyone notice?
Sometimes we will know.
Often, we will not.
A teacher may never know what became of the student they encouraged.
A parent may repeat the same lesson for years before eventually hearing their adult child say, “I remember when you taught me…”
A business owner may give someone their first opportunity without realizing that experience eventually helped them build something of their own.
A stranger may offer a few words of encouragement and never know those words arrived on one of the hardest days of someone’s life.
Impact does not require our awareness to be real.
⸻
People learn from more than what we tell them.
They watch how we live.
Our children watch how we treat people.
Our employees watch how we respond when things go wrong.
Our friends watch whether our actions match our words.
People notice how we handle success.
They also notice how we handle disappointment.
Whether we intend to or not, our lives are constantly communicating something.
Character creates ripples.
Integrity creates ripples.
Generosity creates ripples.
But so do anger, dishonesty, selfishness, and disrespect.
We cannot control every interpretation of our lives.
But we can become more conscious of what we are putting into the water.
⸻
We sometimes believe impact must be impressive.
It does not.
Hold the door.
Make the call.
Write the note.
Give the compliment.
Share the knowledge.
Introduce two people who could help one another.
Listen when someone needs to be heard.
Tell your children you are proud of them.
Thank the person whose contribution normally goes unnoticed.
None of these actions will make headlines.
But significance rarely requires an audience.
Sometimes the smallest stone creates the ripple someone else needed.
⸻
Some of the most meaningful things we give others come from places that once hurt us.
Failure can become wisdom.
Loss can become compassion.
Mistakes can become guidance.
Adversity can become encouragement.
Our scars can become evidence that difficult chapters do not have to become final chapters.
This does not mean every painful experience needs to be shared publicly.
Some things remain personal.
But when the moment is right, our willingness to say, “I have been there too,” can remove loneliness from another person’s struggle.
What once happened to us can eventually become something that helps someone else.
Pain can ripple too.
But when transformed through wisdom, sometimes it ripples as purpose.
⸻
Think about the people who influenced your life.
Someone believed in you.
Someone gave you an opportunity.
Someone challenged you.
Someone forgave you.
Someone told you something you needed to hear.
Someone demonstrated what was possible.
They may not even remember the moment.
But you do.
That should remind us of something powerful:
We may currently be playing that role in somebody else’s story.
A conversation that feels ordinary to us may become a turning point for them.
We do not need to know which moments will matter most.
We simply need to become the kind of people capable of creating good ones.
⸻
Legacy is often discussed as something we leave behind.
I believe it begins much earlier.
Legacy is already moving through the people we influence.
It lives in the lessons our children carry.
The opportunities our employees eventually give someone else.
The kindness another person repeats because they first experienced it from us.
The knowledge someone teaches because we once taught them.
The courage someone discovers because we believed in them before they believed in themselves.
Legacy is not only what remains after our life.
Legacy is what continues because of our life.
That means we are building it right now.
⸻
Pause and ask yourself:
• What kind of ripple am I creating in the people closest to me?
• Who created a positive ripple in my life that I have never thanked?
• What lesson from my journey could help someone else?
• Are my daily actions communicating the values I say I believe?
• If someone repeated the way I treated them today, would I be proud of what continued?
Sometimes understanding our influence requires looking beyond ourselves.
⸻
You do not need to create the entire wave.
You simply need to be responsible for the ripple that begins with you.
⸻
Becoming a ripple means understanding that our lives are connected in ways we may never completely see.
Our words travel.
Our examples travel.
Our kindness travels.
Our choices travel.
What begins with us may eventually reach people whose names we will never know.
As I shared in Choices, our lives are shaped by the decisions we make daily.
But perhaps one of the greatest responsibilities of those choices is recognizing that their influence rarely ends with us.
Someone is watching.
Someone is learning.
Someone is remembering.
And someday, someone may give to another person what they first received from you.
In the Year of Becoming, becoming a ripple means living with the awareness that significance is not measured only by how many people know our name.
Sometimes it is measured by how much good continues moving through the world because we were here.
You may never see how far your ripple travels…so make sure what begins with you is worth passing on.
